The Center for Mathematical Analysis, Geometry, and Dynamical Systems has been participating in this partnership between Portuguese institutions and the Carnegie Mellon University since the program was launched in 2006. The program offers PhD Scholarships in Applied Mathematics and supports a Visiting Faculty and Researchers Program.
 
Einstein gravity and nonlinear waves: physical models, numerical simulations and data analysis

The study of nonlinear waves on curved geometries have been increasingly important in physics and engineering, for example to model and build more efficient and environmentally friendly materials. The difficulty in dealing with those wave equations, including the Einstein equations, led to im- pressive recent developments of geometry and analysis as well as powerful numerical methods requiring the highest computer power. In turn, the re- cent observations of the most challenging wave signals such as gravitational waves ignited unprecedented investment on experiments and data analysis. This research network will allow interdisciplinary mobility and training of researchers in the new methods relevant to current and near-future developments in those fields.

This Action aims at developing a comprehensive approach for studying strongly-interacting systems in classical and quantum physics by exploit- ing symmetries, dualities, and the internal consistency of the underlying theories. This calls for the cooperation of researchers from different fields, across Europe and beyond. The Action will bring together theoretical and mathematical physicists with expertise in quantum field theory, string the- ory, gravity, geometry and information theory, establishing the first network of this kind centred around Europe. Such a critical mass will also boost the visibility and impact of European research in theoretical physics.

Based on advanced geometric and topological constructions the ReNewQuantum teams will build a new approach to Quantum Theory - providing explicit recursive schemes which compute effectively quantum corrections to all orders and obtaining exact results using all non-perturbative contributions.
 

SAUL - Superdiffusive anomalous and universal laws

Critical phenomena and universality are cornerstones of probability and mathematical physics, both from a pure and an applied point of view. At points on which physical systems undergo phase transitions, the so-called critical points, the phenomenology is described by universal mathematical objects, that do not depend on the fine properties of the underlying mi- croscopic systems. From a purely theoretical point of view, these universal objects have striking mathematical properties, which turns their description into a multidisciplinary endeavor. The task force of this project is dedicated to deriving universal anomalous laws, both at hydrodynamics (determin- istic) and fluctuations (random) from underlying super-diffusive stochastic systems. Our focus is to understand, at the hydrodynamics level, the nature of anomalous behavior with boundary conditions from the random micro- scopic dynamics.
