José Natário interviewed by BBC Science Focus Magazine.
2020-06-09

"Warp drive" refers to certain mathematical solutions of Einstein's equations in General Relativity that would allow faster than light travel by deforming spacetime appropriately. However, general theorems proved by José Natário in 2002 show that these solutions are physically unattainable, since they always involve negative energy and the formation of horizons. Recently, José Natário discussed these results in an interview to BBC Science Focus Magazine.

Course on Martingale problem and lumpability for Markov processes
2019-02-18 — 2019-03-14

A one month course by Johel Beltrán, Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú, with sessions Mon, Wed, Thu, from 14:00 to 16:00, February 18 to March 14 2019. Room 5.18, Mathematics Building on the IST Alameda campus.

The martingale problem is an important tool in probability theory introduced by Stroock and Varadhan as an approach to Markov processes. The purpose of this course is to present a detailed introduction to the martingale problem theory as well as a review of recent applications to the study of two different subjects:

  1. metastability of zero range processes and
  2. Kingman’s process as scaling limit for coalescing random walks.

Interestingly, they both will be tackled as instances of a more general problem: lumpability for Markov processes.

Mini-course on Hydrodynamic limit of particle systems on resistance spaces
2019-01-25 — 2019-02-06

The goal of the mini-course by Joe Chen is to describe the recent progress on establishing scaling limits of many-particle systems on state spaces which are bounded in the resistance metric, a.k.a. "resistance spaces." These include trees, fractals, and random graphs arising from critical percolation. As a concrete example, one can establish scaling limits of the weakly asymmetric exclusion process on the Sierpinski gasket interacting with 3 boundary reservoirs, which generalizes (in a nontrivial way) the analysis on  the unit interval interacting with 2 boundary reservoirs.

The key ideas behind these results will be explained, and connections to  the analysis of (S)PDEs, and issues of non-equilibrium statistical physics,  on resistance spaces will be discussed. From a technical point of view, some novel functional inequalities for the exclusion process that relates to electrical resistance will be addressed, and the way they are used to effect "coarse-graining" in passing to the scaling limits will be described.

Jack K. Hale, 1928-2009
2009-12-08

It is with the deepest regret that we announce the passing of Professor Jack Hale. His continued support during the years was felt under a great many number of forms, starting with his direct support to the Mathematics Department in its launch of its Master Programme in 1984, and including his support to the Centro de Análise Matemática, Geometria e Sistemas Dinâmicos through its Advisory Board.

His contribution to the Development of Department of Mathematics was recognized by Instituto Superior Técnico with the award of a Honoris Causa Doctorate through Universidade Técnica de Lisboa in 1991. In 1999 the Center organized at IST an International Conference in his honor under the title Dynamical Systems and Evolutionary Equations. It is impossible to overestimate his contribution to the development of CAMGSD.

A biography is published in JDE 168, 3-9 (2000).
